All shallow coastal habitats matter as nurseries for Mediterranean juvenile fish

چکیده

Abstract Coastal zones are ecosystems of high economic value but exposed to numerous disturbances, while they represent nurseries for many fish species, raising the issue preservation their functions and services. In this context, juvenile assemblages all types habitats present in shallow coastal were studied on south-east coast France using underwater visual censuses warm (June–July 2014) cold (April 2015) periods. A total fourteen habitat characterized, which could be grouped into three broad categories, rocky substrates (natural artificial), sedimentary bottoms with levels granulometry, seagrass beds including Cymodocea nodosa Posidonia oceanica meadows; ecotones or interfaces between categories individualized as particular types. The abiotic biotic descriptors 14 did not vary time, except a higher cover percentage canopy height macrophytes period, increased three-dimensional structure some habitats. taxonomic composition density analyzed both multivariate univariate descriptors, after grouping 57 species recorded 41 well-individualized taxa. It highlighted importance mosaic complete development life stages fishes, diversity fisheries resources Mediterranean Sea.

Marine fish communities in shallow volcanic habitats.

This survey of the marine ichthyofauna of the Piton de La Fournaise volcano at Reunion Island is the first explanatory study of fish community structures in this area. It describes and analyses the main qualitative descriptors of the fish communities (i.e. species richness, diet, life history and geographical distribution) and their spatio-temporal organization. This investigation in 2011 exami...

Do nursery habitats provide shelter from flow for juvenile fish?

Juvenile fish nurseries are an essential life stage requirement for the maintenance of many fish populations. With many inshore habitats globally in decline, optimising habitat management by increasing our understanding of the relationship between juvenile fish and nursery habitats may be a prudent approach. Previous research on post-settlement snapper (Chrysophrys auratus) has suggested that s...

True Value of Estuarine and Coastal Nurseries for Fish: Incorporating Complexity and Dynamics

Coastal ecosystems, such as estuaries, salt marshes, mangroves and seagrassmeadows, comprise some of theworld’s most productive and ecologically significant ecosystems. Currently, the predominant factor considered in valuing coastal wetlands as fish habitats is the contribution they make to offshore, adult fish stocks via ontogenetic migrations. However, the true value of coastal nurseries for ...

Differences in juvenile trophic niche for two coastal fish species that use marine and estuarine nursery habitats

In coastal regions, age-0 juveniles of many fish species are capable of recruiting to either marine or estuarine nursery habitats, yet the ecological consequences for cohorts that use marine versus estuarine nurseries is poorly understood. In the present study, stable isotope (δ13C, δ15N) and stomach contents data were used to compare trophic ecology associated with differential habitat use for...

Shoreline development and degradation of coastal fish reproduction habitats.

Coastal development has severely affected habitats and biodiversity during the last century, but quantitative estimates of the impacts are usually lacking. We utilize predictive habitat modeling and mapping of human pressures to estimate the cumulative long-term effects of coastal development in relation to fish habitats. Based on aerial photographs since the 1960s, shoreline development rates ...
